Loan #012

A new batch has arrived from the gentleman Blazers. This batch is a little different from the rare-title-wowsers! in the past. While the CD-i preservation community has done a hell of a job dumping super rare discs lately, we wanted to go back to the basics for this batch and dump some of the missing fundamentals from the US region.

A perfectly boring batch, and that's a good thing...

  • Game verifies - we're verifying US retail editions against Demonstration Discs here largely. Yep they match - now for the mods to log it in redump...
  • Edutainment - edutainment titles released for the CD-i by-and-large are little kids games + multimedia. For this reason, they're the next-most-relevant category to the CD-i gamers' interest. A large amount of this category were undumped in redump before this batch arrived. You'll also notice two the two versions of How The Camel Got His Hump and How the Rhino Got His Skin! Originally released in English, they were re-issued with English / Spanish dual languages. Camel got a slight disc art update as you see above!
  • Revisions - Two notable mentions:
    • Zombie Dinos jewelcase variant has been confirmed to be a newly discovered build! This is one reason Blazers & I have been comparing Longbox variants & jewelcases for the US CD-i releases - to discover revisions!
    • Let's Go Skiing! - this REV 0 version was discovered in the TOSEC set, but missing from Redump. Luckily Blazers has the missing version!
This batch of dumps should be added to redump, we're seeing great progress in shrinking the US Miss list.

Thanks again to Blazers for this loan!

Nobelia - A new CD-i Title is released!

Nobelia is a promising title released by developer TwBurn - self described as "Zelda meets Bomberman". Many of us have been watching the progress of this game unfold on the Philips CD-i Community Discord and are excited that it's official release is upon us!

Quite frankly, the title is looking to be one of the better games to ever release for the system, so I'm going to highly recommend picking up a copy for any true Philips CD-i fans out there.

Interestingly, the game is including the source code on the disc, which should be a fun treat for all you tinkerers out there - and acts to create a physical record of preservation.

Ordering is available worldwide, shipping from Europe and North America.

Loan #011

It's been a few blue moons since Blazers & I have collaborated on bringing you more rare goodies to enjoy, but this latest batch won't disappoint.

First and foremost - for all you real VIS collectors - the holy grail of Video Movie Guide 1993 has arrived!

The most elusive of the VIS collection, the disc has now been submitted for digital preservation in reudmp.org's database.

Additionally -  the case on the left side of the above picture contains a couple VIS ring code variants (which verified the current redump entries), and a mishmash of CDi USA discs in need of preservation including...

...the final two movie titles of the Philips USA CDi DV set! (All remaining USA movies to be dumped from the Philips CD-i branding are VCD.) Congrats to us on hitting this milestone!

Additionally the case came with a few software revisions / variants including an undumped revision of Little Monster At School and the third known "Centurion" title as seen below:

Isn't it great when your all time favs collab? It's like your favorite music group getting back together for an album that doesn't suck.

Thanks to Blazers <3

Happy New Year Presents!

If 2022 is anything like 2021, we're in for a very nice treat indeed in CD-i preservation progress! And right now all signs are pointing just to that.

Our archive.org account has recently been loaded with scans of dozens and dozens of rare CD-i discs - including early "Prototype" discs, many Euro variants, and Demonstration Discs - brought to you by CD-i Fan, an anonymous donor, and yours truly:

In the past few days, we've had dozens of rare discs added to redump.org & archive.org, and dozens more already in queue for the redump mods to add:

Rare discs have been poured in at a rapid rate this past year, so fast that it's almost easy to take it for granted. Looking back at 2021 - I want to pay homage to our preservation brethren as well as our enablers. Thank you for your fantastic contributions to preservation in 2021: KailoKrya, Landcross, Blazers, rosewood, CD-i Fan, Jackal, UnlockerPT, omegalfa, Bart at the Home Computer Museum, Steep Haywire, diego, retaliator, Hiccup, and LoStraniero. Spank me if I've forgotten anyone else! Happy New Year everyone!

Looking to 2022
Progress will continue from existing projects-in-motion, and we should expect many more rare treats ahead.

But we can use help with a couple things in particular:
  • We need more dumpers! Especially in Europe. People who are willing to buy and properly dump variants especially.
  • We need rare disc lenders! People who own rare discs that can lend them out for dumping if they don't want to dump themselves.
  • Demonstration Discs / Pre-Production Discs: If you can dump them for us great, but I'm willing to trade / buy if you have them! I've been furiously working on a catalog this past year of such discs and want to continue my research.
Please reach out to me if you can lend a hand.

Another Preproduction Photo Dump

I'm in the midst of re-organizing a "Non-Redump" set for Philips CD-i and in the process I've accumulated a hefty set of images - largely from Hidden Palace - of CD-i preproduction discs. I'm publishing this collection here for reference purposes, all credits to Hidden Palace for these images (except The Apprentice and Digital Video 1.01)!

Home Computer Museum - Pics of the Philips Disc Cache

CD-i Fan was kind enough to share his cache of Philips-related photos from the Home Computer Museum with us - an amazing resource of visual documentation for the packaging of many very rare discs. icdia.co.uk has additional photos and a list of contents to help guide you through the photos seen below (along with a lot of other neat stuff)!

This massive drop of photos includes many discs dumped by redump.org preservationists on location at the museum. Surely this will be one of Preserve CD-i's best posts and I've put comparatively little effort into it!
